Philadelphia Eagles take one more chance with punter Mat McBriar – NFL News
Philadelphia Eagles have signed punter Mat McBriar on a two-year deal after the player was released during the final roster adjustments just before the start of the regular season.
The signing has come following the Eagles’ decision to release punter Chas Henry, who had been retained by the team during the final roster cuts.
Both McBriar and Henry competed for a place in the team and performed well during the preseason. However, only one was able to become part of the 53-man squad of the regular season.
According to the details present on the team’s website, McBriar said of joining the team again:
"I went head-to-head with Chas for all of the preseason, and it was a good battle and I really thought whoever won that — and that was Chas — would do a great job. So I was somewhat surprised in that regard to hear from them already."
McBriar is a two-time Pro Bowler, who could give Eagles some advantage in their Week 4 game.
Since McBriar has spent a lot of seasons with Dallas Cowboys, he has a good experience of playing against Cowboys’ National Football Conference (NFC) East rivals New York Giants.
In Week 4 game, Eagles will face Giants and the game is important for both teams because NFC East has shown competitive environment right from the start of the season.
At present, Eagles, Cowboys and Giants are at 2-1 each after three games and things could go in favour of any team in the next few weeks.
This has prompted Eagles to gather as many weapons as possible as they prepare to face the defending Super Bowl champions. McBriar said of facing Giants:
“It could be interesting to see another NFC East rivalry from the Eagles standpoint. I can’t wait for it, really."
Meanwhile, McBriar has expressed excitement on getting the contract, but at the same time the player has also said that he needs some time to get in full rhythm. He said:
"It can’t get here soon enough, but I also know I need a good week of practice, too, to get familiar with everything again and make sure I can perform at a high level.”
