Philadelphia Flyers GM Paul Holmgren involved in accident, breaks ribs, shoulder -NHL News Update
Philadelphia Flyers general manager, Paul Holmgren, was involved in a scary situation on Monday, September 5, as he fell off while riding his bicycle in Avalon, New Jersey and suffered multiple broken bones including some ribs and his shoulder.
The GM remained hospitalised Tuesday at Cooper University Hospital in Camden and is expected to fully recover from what could have been much more serious had he not been wearing a helmet to protect his head. He also came through with minor scraps on his
head and shin.
Philadelphia managing group, Comcast-Spectacor, made the announcement through a released statement when learning about the incident.
"He has some broken ribs, broken shoulder and some stitches on his leg and arm, but Paul's tough so he'll be right back in the game," said Peter Luukko, president and chief operating officer of Comcast-Spectacor in a statement
According to Holmgren, he had been involved in the bike accident, which did not involve any other person or vehicle, but was due to loosing balance while riding or maybe even possible hitting something.
"It appears that he might have hit a rut or something as he was biking in Avalon. I know Paul; he's pretty fast on that bike so he probably went over pretty hard. The good news is that it's certainly nothing life-threatening and we'll have him back", added
Luukko.
Holmgren also released a statement while in the hospital to let the public know that he is a bit sore but otherwise in perfectly safe hands and is feeling much better.
Players and people who know Holmgren offered their condolences on the incident via social networking website, Twitter. Players like Flyers forward, James van Riemsdyk and defenseman, Matt Carle, were some of the first to express their thoughts on the situation
and termed it as very scary.
GM Paul Holmgren still has a long way ahead of him as the teams’ top level executive as he signed onto a three-year extension after being offered it by Comcast-Spectacor earlier in January and is set to continue well through the 2013-2014 season.
