Philadelphia Flyers add to Ottawa Senators problems beating them, 7-2 -NHL Match Update
Ottawa might be a better team overall than they were last season, but it certainly has not shown in their contests during the new 2011-2012 National Hockey League (NHL) regular season, by losing their third straight against Philadelphia Flyers by a huge,
7-2, Tuesday night, October 18, 2011, at the Scotiabank Place in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.
So far, the Senators have managed to win a single match against Minnesota Wild earlier in their third matchup, but now having played six in total, they currently stand at a disappointing, 1-5.
Ottawa Senators head coach, Paul MacLean, can just continue giving political statements, but this time he knew they would not be able to get away with it.
"I think we stopped playing when they got that first goal and allowed them to get three more", MacLean said, about the way his team played. "We started playing in the second period when the pressure was off. We're not very pleased at all and we need to have
an evaluation of our team and how we play because we're not doing it very well”.
Whatever the situation might be, MacLean is committed on turning things around.
"We win as a team, we lose as a team and we'll fix it as a team", he added.
Matt Read scored the first for Philadelphia, putting them ahead by one. Wayne Simmonds added another less than two minutes later during their first power play advantage, followed by Claude Giroux on another Ottawa penalty, while Maxime Talbot fired the fourth
with a minute left to play.
Jason Spezza finally put Ottawa up on the scoreboard by scoring with 1:01 remaining in the second period, which gave the impression that the team was considering on being a little more serious with their playing in the final period.
Philadelphia had other plans and executed it well with James van Riemsdyk taking advantage of another power play followed by Sean Couturier and Harry Zolnierczyk, all within four minutes of each other to finalise the match. Erik Karlsson gave Ottawa their
second, but with 20 seconds remaining, it was virtually useless.
Flyers play at home next time against Washington Capitals on Thursday, while Ottawa Senators face Winnipeg Jets on the same day.
