Philadelphia Flyers assistant coach Craig Berube willing to head Washington Capitals if given chance
Former National Hockey League (NHL) enforcer and now the assistant coach of the Philadelphia Flyers, Craig Berube, expressed his willingness and interest in taking over the head coach position with Washington if Capitals ever wanted to give him a chance.
When asked whether he had a special interest in coaching the Capitals team after Dale Hunter resigned following elimination to New York Rangers in the 2012 NHL Stanley Cup Eastern Conference Playoff Semi-Finals, Berube termed it to be an interest with the
position in general.
“It was tough for him,” Berube said about Hunter. “It took time for him to get them to play the way he wanted, but the results came out at the end.”
Being an assistant coach is a great position in the NHL, but when there is an open opportunity to move up in the ranks, who would not like to take a chance?
"Any time you get an opportunity to be a head coach, you're interested," Berube said taking to CSNWashington.com on Tuesday, May 22, 2012. "My situation is good here. No one has contacted me about it. We'll see what happens."
Up until now, there has been no official confirmation from the Washington Capitals side whether they are in contact with Berube or are interesting in trying out the former NHL player for their vacant coaching position.
Craig Berube, a native of Calahoo, Alberta, Canada, played a total of 1,054 games during his major league career with teams like Philadelphia Flyers, Toronto Maple Leafs, Calgary Flames, Washington Capitals and New York Islanders.
Having such a vast playing career is always a great way to become a coach in the major league, especially with a team that a person has spent nearly six seasons playing for.
Berube has a career record of 159 points (61 goals, 98 assists).
The current assistant coach retired in 2003-2004 and kicked off his coaching career by becoming an assistant for the American Hockey League’s (AHL) Philadelphia Phantoms, eventually becoming head coach in 2006 and later on made an entry into their major
league affiliates.
Looking at Washington’s thirst for a Stanley Cup and physical playing capabilities, Craig Berube just might be the man for the job.
