Philadelphia Flyers avenge its Stanley Cup 2010 defeat to Chicago Blackhawks by beating it 4-1 – NHL
On Sunday, Philadelphia Flyers got its revenge by defeating Chicago Blackhawks by an embarrassing 4-1 score in front of a Chicago crowd of more than 20,000. It was the first time this year that Flyers has visited the United Center in Chicago, after its defeat
in the 2010 Stanley Cup Finals to Chicago Blackhawks at the arena.
Interestingly in the first period, no shots were made which made the light shine, but as the game progressed, Philly got its first goal in the second which increased its momentum resulting in three more goals in the 2nd and 3rd period.
The Chicago crowd remained shocked throughout the game, as the memories of Hawks lifting up the Stanley Cup are still afresh in their minds.
Credit must be given to Flyers’ Sergei Bobrovsky for making 30 amazing saves, while only letting one slid past him.
Jeff Carter, who scored two goals for Philly, commented after the game, saying, “It was obviously a big motivation factor for us”.
This win has definitely boosted Philly’s morale, which was looking for a big win going into the match.
Claude Giroux must have felt great after the match, knowing that he assisted all 4 goals scored by Flyers which secured the match for the team.
History was repeated when Marian Hossa was awarded a penalty shot after Philly’s Braydon Coburn was ruled to have grappled the puck with his hands during the scramble in the box.
Hossa became the only Blackhawks’ player to score a penalty shot in Chicago since Troy Murray in 1987.
It was especially disappointing for Hawks as it was coming out of a 4-1 victory against the big boys of the league, Detroit Red Wings, on Saturday.
Chicago’s goalie, Corey Crawford, displayed an impressive game against Philadelphia Flyers, but all for nothing, as Chicago’s offense was weak at implementing a proper strategy.
Toews, a key player for Chicago, was hit hard by Mike Richards at the start of the second period.
Toews was tackled near the Flyers’ blue line, causing noticeable damage in his performance throughout the rest of the game.
Getting physical was made a priority by both teams as they showed no mercy to each other whenever an opportunity opened up. Tensions rose as the game began and fights broke out in the first 40 minutes of the match.
Both the team’s coaches were prepared to leave rivalry behind them, but the players weren’t. They came in strong and played hard.
“We were pretty excited for this game”, Giroux said, showing that the players still had the urge to win, not for the win itself, but for the team.
“I'm really happy we won the game today because we maintained our position in first place this year", Flyers’ coach, Peter Laviolette, said. "It's about looking forward not looking back”.
This was the first loss for Chicago in regulation season since the 5th of this month, but was a performance win for Chicago’s goalie, Corey Crawford, who made 30 saves.
