Philadelphia Flyers captain Chris Pronger to miss 2-3 weeks with eye injury -NHL News Update
Philadelphia Flyers lost one of their top contributors, veteran captain, Chris Pronger, on Monday night as the 37-year-old was ejected out of the game nearly midway through the first period against Toronto Maple Leafs after being hit in the eye by a hockey
stick of another player.
The incident was quick and could be seen with a replay but it was termed to be accidental as Toronot’s Mikhail Grabovski shot the puck after taking control of it in the circle, hitting Pronger in the eye after finishing the attempt.
Philadelphia Flyers general manager, Paul Holmgren, made the announcement of his player to miss at least two to three weeks due to the incident.
"He's going to see the eye doctor every day for the next four days", said Holmgren. "We think after that he'll be … I don't want to say out of danger, but if everything goes OK and the swelling goes down, he should start on an exercise program sometime after
that and we're hoping he could rejoin the team in 10 days to two weeks -- skating-wise, not necessarily playing".
Coming out a season which Pronger recently termed as “the season from h**l”, due to a number of injuries and as many surgeries including a concussion, knee injury, elbow and hand surgery, the veteran hoped to stay healthy for the new 2011-2012 National Hockey
League (NHL) regular season.
"I think he was very scared and rightly so", Holmgren added about Pronger’s situation.
Last season, the former second overall draft pick during round-one of the 1993 NHL Entry Draft by the Hartford Whalers, was limited to participating in only 50 games but still managed to pot 25 points (4 goals, 21 assists).
Kicking off the new season, Pronger had played in all eight games thus far and was performing much better than expected by already having picked up seven points (1 goal, 6 assists).
Hopefully, Philadelphia will not remain for long without their captain as they eye a Stanley Cup championship, which is conditional that they have a healthy Chris Pronger on the line-up.
More developments on Chris Pronger’s status can be expected in the upcoming days.
