Philadelphia Flyers edge Florida Panthers 3-2 -NHL Match Update
Florida is having a much better performance as compared to their positioning in the recent years but had it disturbed on Sunday, November 13, 2011, as the Philadelphia Flyers edged the Panthers, 3-2, at the BankAtlantic Center in Sunrise, Florida, United
States.
The shooting and saving nearly remaining the same throughout the Sunday night contest between the two teams, but as Ilya Bryzgalov faced 33 shots, he fell short on only two while counterpart in the Florida net, Jose Theodore, let three in on a total of 35
attempts.
The Panthers also failed to capitalise on seven power play opportunities, which could have easily handed over the match to them, but Philadelphia also could not take advantage of five which were given to them throughout the 60 minute contest.
"I thought our guys really competed well, skated well", Flyers coach Pete Laviolette said. "I thought our guys responded well and played a hard-fought game".
Danny Briere scored his fifth of the regular season and the first of the night to give Philadelphia a go head start to work on with less than four minutes remaining in the opening period.
The goal came nearly a minute after Philadelphia’s, Zac Rinaldo, and Florida’s, Matt Bradley, exchanged fists and were awarded a five minute major penalty, which would carry over to 27 seconds into the second period.
Braydon Coburn extended the lead at the 6:50 mark into the second but was closely followed by Evgeni Dadonov for his first of the season halfway through.
Jason Garrison made it tough for Florida as he was booked for a 10 minute game misconduct and gave Philadelphia a penalty shot, which the Flyers capitalised on, and had the Panthers scrambling around without a player for nearly the whole period.
Matt Read made the game-winner shorthanded on the penalty, early on as Maxime Talbot was awarded a double minor for high sticking. Tomas Fleischmann put Florida within reach of the score by one but with eight seconds remaining, the Panthers could not catch-up.
"I think our composure overall was not great tonight and that was a pretty good example of it, to lose our top forward for the last 10 minutes of the game", Panthers coach Kevin Dineen said. "Without him in the line-up, that's a pretty big hole".
