Philadelphia Flyers eliminate Pittsburgh Penguins in Game 6, 5-1 -NHL Playoffs Update
What a disappointment it was for the Pittsburgh team as the Philadelphia Flyers rebounded in a huge way to oust the superstar filled Penguins team, 5-1, in Game 6 of the 2012 National Hockey League (NHL) Stanley Cup Eastern Conference Playoff Quarterfinal
series on Sunday, April 22, 2012, at the sold-out Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
As the series returned from Pittsburgh to Philadelphia, the Flyers were determined to kick out the Penguins once and for all in a series that could definitely be termed as one of the most intense and competitive in history.
Penguins were definitely one of the favourites when it came to the end of the 2011-2012 NHL regular season, looking at how they made a run for one of the East’s top spots in the final weeks.
"All teams are good, but there's something about Pittsburgh, their history recently and probably being favourites in a lot of people's minds, to be able to play the way our group did and to be able to move on I think speaks volumes about our group," Flyers
coach, Peter Laviolette, said. "I think it's real satisfying to be able to move on against that team. A lot of people picked them, so we were underdogs and went out and did the things we had to do."
Successfully shutting down Pittsburgh’s star captain, Sidney Crosby, and Evgeni Malkin, Philadelphia had done all the right things along with taking a dominating 3-0 lead in the series.
Claude Giroux kicked off the scoring with a snap past Marc-Andre Fleury while Scott Hartnell widened the lead with his second of the series on a power play.
Erik Gustafsson made it a 3-0 game 5:25 into the second period followed by Pittsburgh’s first and only from Evgeni Malkin on a breakaway on another added man advantage while Danny Briere capped it off again.
Brayden Schenn finalised the scoring to secure a well dealt match to Pittsburgh and ultimately eliminating them from the playoffs.
"Guys were sacrificing their bodies to block shots and were paying the price taking hits to make plays," Hartnell said. "It was awesome to see."
Philadelphia is now in the Eastern Conference Semi-Finals and will have to wait to see who their opponent from the New Jersey Devils-Florida Panthers series will be.
