Philadelphia Flyers get third straight win over Vancouver Canucks 5-4 -NHL Match Update
Philadelphia Flyers continued their perfect winning streak by getting their third straight of the 2011-2012 National Hockey League (NHL) regular season over 2011 Stanley Cup finalists, Vancouver Canucks, 5-4, Wednesday night, October 12, at the Wells Fargo
Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States.
Like many other teams in the major league, Philadelphia is also eyeing a Stanley Cup championship this season after changing around their club with expensive offseason acquisitions in the form of goalie, Ilya Bryzgalov and NHL legend, Jaromir Jagr, along
with a number of other players.
"I think it says we've got great depth", said forward, Wayne Simmonds, who is one of those newly added players. "We're a four-line team. Whatever line you put on the ice is going to create offense and be strong defensively as well. That's great going forward".
Claude Giroux and Chris Pronger scored two straight goals for Philadelphia midway through the first period, both being on power plays.
Vancouver’s Mikael Samuelsson took advantage of Philadelphia’s first penalty of the match as Scott Hartnell was booked with a minor for high-sticking, giving both the Sedin twins their first assists.
James van Riemsdyk extended the lead at the 17:48 mark on an assist from Giroux for his first of the season as well.
Henrik Sedin scored his inaugurating goal, followed by Flyers 22-year-old right winger, Jakub Voracek, who snap-shot the puck from 24 feet through Roberto Luongo.
Christopher Higgins ended the second period of regulation with his second of the season and lessening the gap, brining Vancouver within reach of one.
Daniel Sedin levelled the match with his second goal on an early Philadelphia penalty as James van Riemsdyk was penalised for unsportsmanlike conduct.
Andrej Meszaros made the game-winner nearly a minute later as both goalies shutdown the opposing offences from scoring any further goals.
Even though Vancouver scored goals when they needed it the most, they need to continue finding opportunities and especially work on their defence.
"Two goals is pretty good in a game, but still we got to step up when we need it the most and that's late in the game, so that's our responsibility and we didn't do that", said Daniel Sedin. "We had enough chances to score but we got to put it in".
Vancouver Canucks play Detroit Red Wings on Thursday while Philadelphia Flyers stay at home to hose Los Angeles Kings on Saturday.
