Philadelphia Flyers in trade of a defenseman from Tampa Bay Lightning follow Dallas Stars deal – NHL News
A day after the Philadelphia Flyers announced acquiring of the defenseman, Nicklas Grossman, from the Dallas Stars, they confirmed on Sunday, February 18, 2012, to have landed a trade deal with the Tampa Bay Lightning for another defensive player.
Under the terms of the new deal, Flyers will receive Lightning’s defenseman, Pavel Kubina, in exchange for their minor-league forward, Jon Kalinski.
As a part of the deal, Lightning are also eligible to get a draft pick in 2012 and 2013 respectively from Flyers.
It is for the second time in last couple of days that both teams have traded their players to different teams on the National Hockey League (NHL).
The hockey trade market will be close after the deadline of February 27, 2012, and almost all teams around the NHL have become active to capitalise on the opportunity to prevent their players from becoming free agent.
Lightning player, who apparently has no trade clause in his deal, was held out of the side from practising with his teammates last week, while his team waited to work out a solution for him.
He had been asked by the team general manager, Steve Yzerman, to name five potential teams he would like to be traded to in exchange of players.
Flyers turned out to be his prospective choice and his team has worked out a deal for him in exchange of a minor-league player and two draft picks.
With Lightning, Kubina was in the final year of his two-year contract, which valued $3.85 million on average. As a result of the trade to Flyers, he will now honour the final year of his deal with the new franchise.
Kubina has also played for Atlanta Thrashers and Toronto Maple Leafs during his professional career before joining Lightning in 2010.
He has also been lucky to be a part of the side during their successful run of 2004 Stanley Cup and has made it to the NHL All-Star Game during the same season.
Jon Kalinski, who will be joining Lightning following the trade deal, has represented AHL Adirondack Phantoms in 40 games this season. He has managed to score nine goals and 12 points during the tenure.
Lightning are expected to assign Kalinski to its American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate in Norfolk, while waiting for a couple of year for the draft picks.
More deals are expected from other teams around the league in the coming days as the deadline for trade market is fast nearing its end.
A number of players from all NHL teams are expected to hit the free agency market following the expiry of trade period, and thereby being available for potential signing by any of the franchises around the NHL.
The trade window provides an opportunity to the players from the main league and second tier league to join different outfits and showoff their skills.
