Philadelphia Flyers pick up second with 3-2 win over New York Islanders -NHL Update
It might have been the end of Ilya Bryzgalov’s impressive shutout streak, but the veteran goalie did not let Philadelphia down as the Flyers edged New York Islanders for their second straight win, 3-2, Thursday night, March 15, 2012, at the sold-out Nassau
Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Uniondale, New York.
Surprisingly, the immense shutout streak which began against Florida Panthers earlier this month, went against Toronto Maple Leafs and New Jersey Devils, finally came to an end in this matchup but it was in the last period of regulation that Bryzgalov allowed
the first goal from their side.
"He comes to work every day, always very focused," Flyers head coach, Peter Laviolette, said. "He's really the one who kept us in games early in the season. Now you're seeing what Bryz can do when we play well in front of him. Quietly, he has shut the door."
Zac Rinaldo had one of the most oblivious goals of the 2011-2012 National Hockey League (NHL) as he scored on a 90 degree angle on the right side of Evgeni Nabokov, which not only surprised New York but him as well.
Claude Giroux got the second of the night a little over midway through the first as Jaromir Jagr set the player up for a one-timer with his 26th of the year to take the lead to 2-0 in a penalty-less period.
Scott Hartnell put in his 33rd of the season 7:02 into round-two after tensions rose early between both teams as Wayne Simmonds and Matt Martin fought at 3:57 and were awarded a five minute major.
Mark Streit nearly brought New York back into round-three of the match as he assisted both goals by Michael Grabner and John Tavares less than a minute apart, but failed to add anymore after that.
"Our major job is to keep playing hard and stay focused on the task at hand -- home ice in the playoffs," Giroux added. "Having a goaltender with confidence is huge for us this time of year."
Philadelphia will be looking to continue with this undefeatable momentum as they face defending Stanley Cup champions, Boston Bruins on Saturday.
New York will be going up against their Eastern Conference rival team, Montreal Canadiens on the same day, which could make for an interesting matchup.
