Philadelphia Flyers’ players Daniel Briere and Claude Giroux enjoy good debuts in the German league
Since the National Hockey League (NHL) lockout, which began on 15th September last month, there are a lot of players who have left America and moved towards top European countries of the ice hockey world to stop themselves of sitting idle in the
lockout.
Most of the European players moved to their native countries and joined leagues like Elitserien Hockey League (SEL) in Sweden, Kontinental Hockey League (KHL) in Russia or Finnish League as they are among the top leagues in Europe and most of the US players
stayed in their country to play the minor leagues, but Philadelphia Flyers’ players decided to do against the both.
Flyers, who feature in the Atlantic Division of the Eastern Conference, saw their alternate captain, forward Daniel Briere and their right winger Claude Giroux move to the German league team, Eisbarën Berlin (Berlin Bears).
Berlin Bears are one of the most successful teams of their league and have won the league title in 6 of the last 8 years. But they suffered an upset loss in their debut game as they lost after a very tough, close and competitive game. The thrilling game
was decided by a deciding goal with few minutes remaining, as Giroux had tied the scores in the last period.
Both of the NHL players showed a great fight and made huge contribution for their team as they scored a combined total of 6 points between them.
Briere is 35 years old and was drafted in the 1996 NHL Draft by the Winnipeg Jets in the first round at 24th overall. He moved to Buffalo Sabres as well, before moving to the Flyers team and has scored 280 goals and 363 assists for a total of
643 points in 813 games.
Claude Giroux on the other hand is much younger than his senior partner and 24 years old. He was selected in the first round of the 2006 NHL Draft by the Flyers, at 22nd overall and has been there since then.
The Hearst, Ontario native has played 285 NHL games and scored 78 goals and 165 assists for a total of 243 points.
