Philadelphia Flyers prevail in intense matchup against New York Rangers 5-3 -NHL Preseason Update
Seeing such intense playing during the 2011 National Hockey League (NHL) preseason between New York Rangers and Philadelphia Flyers on Monday, September 26, as Flyers emerged victorious, 5-3, only makes the fans think about what will be going on during the
regular season and especially the upcoming 2012 NHL Winter Classic in January.
It was a sold-out crowd in the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, as Rangers and Flyers took to the ice. It was not long that both teams had players exchanging fists with each other, sending the crowd into a wild and crazy roar filled with
excitement.
Andreas Thuresson scoring 2:36 into the first period put Philadelphia on the edge when Brian Boyle found his teammate open for the chance.
Philadelphia’s Zac Rinaldo, Tom Sestito along with New York’s Dale Weise and Stu Bickel were given various minor and major penalties for fighting and game misconduct. A number of other players were served with minor and majors for various penalties including
interference, roughing, hooking and tripping.
New York played without their superstar centre, Brad Richards, but Philadelphia had its legendary secret weapon on the ice, Jaromir Jagr, who picked up three points during the matchip.
"He's such a talented guy with the puck", Flyers head coach, Peter Laviolette, said. "He's got a quick release and can generate a lot of offense. He sure looked good to me".
Jaromir Jagr gave Philadelphia their first goal of the match by scoring a little while after the dust settled and players finished up with the fighting. He scored again in the opening five minutes of the second period on another power play opportunity on
an assist by Danny Briere and Claude Giroux.
John Mitchell levelled the match for New York, followed by a tie-breaker from Matt Read and another equaliser from Brian Boyle, all on power plays during the second 20 minutes.
The score was 3-3 entering the final period, but as New York seemed to have cooled down a little too much, Philadelphia struck when they saw the chance as Braydon Coburn shot for Philadelphia to take the lead, followed by Wayne Simmonds with his third of
the preseason with 28 seconds remaining.
