Philadelphia Flyers still confident of doing well even after losing out on Shea Weber –NHL Special
Philadelphia Flyers had started this free agency thinking that they would sign some players to give depth to their roster and make a strong team. With some of their players getting older and some of them being uncertain, they had to find good enough replacements
for them or the right back-up.
One of their defenseman and team captain, Chris Pronger, has missed most of the last two seasons because of the injuries. He underwent a knee surgery after an injury in the 2010-2011 season and then suffered a post-concussion syndrome after a collision with
Martin Hanzal of Phoenix Coyotes.
His career was placed into jeopardy after that incident as he played just 13 matches in the last season and 50 in the one prior to that.
And with other defenseman, Kimmo Timonen who is already 37 years old and is into his last phase of the hockey career after playing for more than 20 years. They desperately needed someone to fill those holes and fit into his shoes.
At the start of July, they were after star defenseman, Ryan Suter, who played for Nashville Predators in the previous season. They chased him all the way but could not hire him as he opted to choose Minnesota Wild instead.
Their own defenseman, who played for them in the last season, Matt Carle, also showed his back to Flyers as he signed with Tampa Bay Lightning after becoming a free agent.
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, based team saw Shea Weber looking for a transfer, thought they will get what they wanted in him and that he is the perfect match for them. All of their hopes were lying on Shea Weber as they decided to throw everything at him.
They presented an offer sheet for Shea Weber which was very interesting and a bold one. As it is mentioned below:
First 4 years of contract: $1 million salary with a $13 million signing bonus per season.
Years 5-6 of contract: $4 million salary with an $8 million signing bonus per season.
Years 7-10: $6 million salary. Year 11: $3 million salary. Years 12-14: $1 million salary.
But their hopes were dashed when Nashville matched their offer and stopped their man from moving to Flyers. Nashville Predators decided to retain their player by coming up with a 14-year offer worth the same amount of money.
General Manager of the Philadelphia Flyers, Paul Holmgren, naturally was content but wished all the best to the player and his team as he said,
"In tendering an offer sheet to Shea Weber, we were trying to add a top defenseman entering the prime of his career. With Nashville matching our offer, we wish Shea and the Predators all the best."
Misery for Flyers is not only their defence but their forward like as well because they lost their veteran Jaromir Jagr and missed out on the opportunity to sign Zach Parise who signed with Minnesota Wild along with Ryan Suter.
Things are not looking that good for them as they have lost more than what they have got but they still are optimistic and hope for the best.
