Philadelphia Flyers win third straight with a victory over the Ottawa Senators
The Philadelphia Flyers continued their impressive run, and have now won nine of their last 10 games, by collecting a 5-1 win over the Ottawa Senators on Monday 15 November.
How it happened
The Flyers took control early in this game outshooting the Senators 17-9 in the opening frame. After Danny Briere scored his ninth of the season to put the Flyers up 1-0, the Senators got an equalizer
when Jason Spezza got his fifth of the year less than two minutes later. But from that point on it was all Philadelphia. Darroll Powe got his third of the season less than two minutes after Spezza had tied it up, and it was a lead the Flyers would never relinquish.
Claude Giroux continues to impress this season as he scored his team leading 10th goal of the season with a power play strike late in the second period.
It was the Mike Richards show in the third period as his ability to read the game allowed him to sneak in and steal the puck from the Senators defence and take possession at his own blueline before skating
the length of the ice and firing a backhand over the shoulder of the Brian Elliot in goal for the Sens. The goal was Richards' second short-handed goal of the season and 22nd of his career. A minute and thirty seconds later and Richards scored his second of
the game and eighth on the season to round out the scoring.
What they're saying
Richards, who was voted the game's first star, explained how everything seems to be going the Flyers' way at the moment.
"We are starting to get a lot of the bounces. In the beginning of the year, there was a lot of posts and pucks just seemed to be slipping off sticks," he told reporters after the game. "You are going to
have that in a year, where you can't seem to find a balance then you have stretches where pucks just end up on the sticks so that's a big part in it."
Danny Briere also commented after the game about how everything seems to be going right for his team and how that feeling has affected the team's play.
"Confidence is a big thing, it seems we're building chemistry, we're feeling better and better with each other," he said. "It's been a lot of fun, I know it's not going to last the whole season but we'll
try to take advantage of it while it's going and while guys are feeling hot with their stick."
Despite the loss, the Senators continue to cling to a spot in the top eight in the Eastern Conference. They travel to Carolina to take on the Hurricanes on Wednesday 17 November.
The Flyers are one of the hottest teams in the NHL at the moment and have the best goal differential in the league. They play on back-to-back nights as they head into Montreal to play the Canadiens on
Tuesday night.
