Philadelphia Flyers wins 4-3 against the New York Islanders in overtime
The first game of Thursday was hosted by the Philadelphia Flyers at the New York Islanders at the Wells Fargo Arena. The Islanders were looking to notch up some vital points so as to strengthen their chances of a play-off finish. On the other hand, the Flyers
were looking to maintain lead upfront and extend their lead to nine points in the Eastern Conference.
Though it was the Islanders who led at the end of the first period but the Flyers managed to come up with a superb performance that saw them scoring twice in the second period to get into the lead. The final period saw both teams bagging goals and ended
with the scores level. Therefore, the game had to be decided in overtime from where the Flyers emerged as 4-3 winners of the game. Andrej Meszaros, defenceman of the Flyers was named the star of the game as he scored the winning goal.
Both teams made a decent start to the game which saw them creating chances for them. However, the early shots weren’t able to find the back of the net. However, the offence wasn’t as strong as expected at the start of the game for the Flyers as the Islanders
matched them.
The away side came up with a superb performance that saw them attacking and maintaining a very tight defence. Much to surprise of everyone in the arena, the Islanders scored the opening goal. The goal was scored by Frans Nielson from a quick fired shot in
the 10th minute.
The Flyers were able to respond to the Islanders pressure with attacks too. However, they were not able to score or give the Islanders a lot to work at the back. The period ended with no further goals as the period ended with the Islanders leading 1-0 going
into the break. During the course of the period, the Islanders made 6 goal attempts while the Flyers made 11 goal attempts.
Both teams started off with the teams attacking and displaying some excellent ice hockey. It didn’t take long for the Flyers to come up with a brilliant piece of play that saw them scoring in the end. The goal was scored by Mike Richards from a quick fired
shot in the second minute.
Both teams continued to attack every now and then and the shots kept on piling. However, the next goal was scored in the 18th minute. The goal was scored by scored James van Riemsdyk that put the Flyers in the lead. The period ended with the Flyers
leading 2-1 as they made 12 goal attempts in the period while the Islanders made 15 goal attempts.
The final 20 minutes started off with both teams continuing on the attacking roads. The Flyers were able to capitalize from early dominance to score in the 6th minute to extend their lead further. The goal was scored by Jeff Carter from a decent
close range tip in shot.
The Islanders emerged productive in the period as they were able to cut the lead to a single goal in the 7th minute as they scored through Matt Martin from a brilliant quick fired shot. The period continued with both teams attacking and it looked
as if the Flyers would win the game.
However, the Islanders scored in the dying stages of the game through Matt Martin once again to level the scores. The period ended with the scores level on 1-1 which meant that overtime was required.
During overtime, Andrej Meszaros scored from a quick fired shot in the 5th minute to win the game 4-3 in the end. The final 20 minutes of play saw the Flyers making 16 goal attempts while the Islanders made 13 goal attempts.
