Philadelphia Phillies’ Cliff Lee will not be approached by New York Yankees, says Brian Cashman-MLB
The New York Yankees’ General Manager Brian Cashman has made it clear that their club will not go after the Philadelphia Phillies’ starting pitcher Cliff Lee as the latter placed him in the trade market.
Cashman is of the view that they have set certain payroll limit related objectives. In order to achieve them, they cannot afford to acquire such an expensive contract of Lee.
As the Phillies are open for trading the starter, scores of organisations have shown preference for obtaining the left hander. However, the point of contention, which is likely to endanger the occurrence of any deal, is the demand for top prospects by the
Phillies.
After going through a forgettable season so far, the Phillies are set to revamp their roster. Trying to build up a strong team for future, they aim to acquire players with the potential to lead them to glories in the years to come.
It is for the same reason that they have decided to trade their quality hurler Lee, despite the fact that the starter can be of great help in improving the team's winning percentage in the remaining part of the season.
Meanwhile, while Cashman rubbished the possibility of obtaining Lee through the trade, he did utter that he does not want to discuss a player of any other organisation.
Furthermore, he clarified that since paying off the yearly salary of Lee goes beyond their financial plans, they will not become part of such a deal.
“I’m not allowed to speak about another team’s player,” Cashman said, “but if there was a hypothetical mythical beast that makes like $25 million a year for the next X amount of years that became hitting the market, we certainly could not participate in
that type of level financial talent.”
As Lee has invited enthusiasm from various clubs, it will be fascinating to know how many prospects an organisation can afford to sacrifice for acquiring the starting pitcher. Thus far, the reports say that the Phillies are not going to agree on anything
less than what they expect.
Therefore, one cannot rule out the possibility that the trade will not take place at the end of the day. It will be interesting to see what happens to Lee and what team he eventually gets traded to.
