Philadelphia Phillies’ Jimmy Rollins aims to surpass Larry Bowa in terms of hits - MLB Update
Shortstop Jimmy Rollins strikes his 2000th hit of his career on Tuesday as he joins the list of few players that have achieved this milestone for the Philadelphia Phillies.
Rollins however aims to supersede Larry Bowa in terms of the number of hits because doing so is one of the most cherished objectives that he wants to achieve in his career.
The distinction has come at a time when he is inviting criticism from various quarters over his inability to show hustle while running through the bases. The embarrassment he had after being benched by the manager due to this will be replaced with the sudden
joy of his incredible achievement. He will be looking to improve sharply from now onward.
Rollins is among the few players that have struck hits for the team even at the time of a slump. Though he has not been as prolific as the management wanted, he has managed to achieve respectable batting average.
On the eve of the trade deadline when the team officials were thinking of unloading the roster and acquiring new players for some time the name of Rollins also appeared in the news. Although Rollins was not traded, his name was considered by the officials
for this as per the reports that emerged back then.
However, right now Rollins is an important part of the offence. Along with the new acquisitions in the line-up, he has contributed to the victories that have been earned by the team in the last month.
“I still have work to do,” Rollins said. “Bowa is the guy I want to get ahead of. He was always saying, ‘I got twenty-two-hundred of those beep-beep-beepers.’ So I want to get him so I can talk trash to him.”
While Manuel is cynical of the slackness Rollins shows while playing, he acknowledges the credentials that he boasts as a hitter.
“Jimmy’s career speaks for itself,” Manuel said. “The position he plays, the run production, the stolen bases. His career jumps out at you.”
Rollins will be trying to achieve consistency as he has struggled to put up better performances on a regular basis. It will be interesting to see as to what numbers he signs off the season with.
