Philadelphia Phillies’ Manager Charlie Manuel comments on club’s recent 1-5 loss to Houston Astros
Philadelphia Phillies manager Charlie Manuel took the opportunity today, September 12 to comment on his team’s recent loss to the Houston Astros at Minute Maid Park in Houston. The game was lost to former Phillies’ pitcher Brett Myers, who supported his
team’s onslaught in the 5-1 winner.
The Phillies scrambled their chance to qualify for the post season on Monday but an amazing stint on the mound from Myers prevented the club from going ahead on the score count. The National League East leaders kicked off the scoring count when they managed
to gain a run from Raul Ibanez who ran home on a Pete Orr single to the centre. The match however turned the other way around soon.
Myers allowed no further runs while the Astros moved forward. The hurler allowed just a run and six hits from his eight innings of pitching. Manuel was impressed and he offered his complement to the 31-year-old.
"He's played with us, and he knows how to pitch to us," Manuel said. "He did a tremendous job. He moved the ball around. We hit a few balls hard early, but then he settled in. I don't think he has any trouble getting up for us."
Manuel pointed the problems in the field during the fourth inning. Ibanez misread Brian Bogusevic’s line drive and there was an incident where Orr and Jimmy Rollins crashed into each other. Both mis-fields ended in singles.
"That bothered me a lot," Manuel said of his team's defence. "It's kind of what led to us losing. I think that played a big role. I thought we played very sloppy."
Oswalt pitched Carlos Lee a curve ball in the fifth on 0-2. The ball was smashed for a two-run homer in the game and the Phillies’ manager had a comment for that play, as well.
"It was hanging, and he was sitting on it," Manuel said. "When he did, he didn't miss it."
Manuel will have to look for a qualification in the next game. The last thing he wants is the team to enter a losing streak.
