Philadelphia Phillies: Regular season results – MLB July 2011
Philadelphia Phillies ended the month of June on a very high note. By maintaining their excellent form, Charlie Manuel and his men had improved their win-loss record to 51-31. Emerging victorious in 17 out of 27 games in June 2011, everything seemed to be
on the right track for the Phillies.
In a three match series against Toronto Blue Jays, the Phillies looked in complete control as they won the opening two games to secure their first series win of the season. In game one, Ryan Howard was absolutely brilliant with the bat as he hit a go ahead
two run single in the ninth inning of the game to lead the Phillies’ in a sensational win.
"This is what we're capable of doing," Howard said. "But at the same time, you've got to know that baseball is an up-and-down type game. As long as you can outscore your opponent, that's the name of the game. It doesn't matter how many runs you get."
The Phillies were outstanding in game two of the series as well. Dominating their rivals in almost all aspects of the game, Charlie Manuel’s side made the most of available opportunities. Not allowing any easy scoring opportunities to the Jays, they had
a rock solid defence in addition to incredible attacking abilities.
Roy Halladay was the leader of the pack as he allowed only eight hits in his sixth straight decision. Chase Utley assisted him with a go ahead home-run and the Phillies rallied past the Jays 5-3 to take a decisive 2-0 lead in the series.
"It was a cool experience for me, something I'll never forget," said Halladay, who took the mound in the bottom of the first to a standing ovation.
"Doc is special," Phillies’ manager Charlie Manuel said. "He puts a lot into it and expects a lot out of himself."
However, the Phillies were unable to maintain their good form in third and final game of the series and the Jays balled back to restore some of their lost pride. In their next three match series, the Phillies got off to another flying start.
Holding their nerves in a close contest, the Phillies looked in terrific shape as they took a 1-0 lead in the series. Demolishing their opponents 14-2 with some high quality baseball, they were absolutely stunning in second game to earn their second series
win of the season.
The Phillies continued to do well in the Major League and they defeated Atlanta Braves, New York Mets, Chicago Cubs, San Diego Padres and Pittsburgh Pirates to end the month on a great note. Their impressive run improved their win-loss record to 68-39.
