Philadelphia Phillies: Regular season results – MLB March 2011
Philadelphia Phillies enjoyed a great run in the 2011 Spring Training season. Charlie Manuel and his men were looking to continue their impressive form during the regular season as well. In a three match series against Houston Astros, the Phillies looked
in commanding form as they won each match of the series, showing class, dominance and authority.
In game one of a sensational series, the Phillies looked to be a determined unit. Everybody contributed towards one of the most epic victories of the year as the Phillies battled past the Astros 5-4 to clinch their first win in a dramatic fashion. Lining
a pinch-hit RBI single off closer Brandon Lyon, John Mayberry Jr. capped a three run rally in the ninth inning to help his side beat the Astros.
"It's all I can ask for for my first Opening Day," said Mayberry. "My parents were here. It's a special day for us."
Team Manager, Charlie Manual was absolutely delighted with the pitching effort and aimed to give similar results in the upcoming games as well.
"When you look at our pitching, we're going to be in a lot of games," manager Charlie Manuel said. "If we can score some runs, we're gonna win a lot of them."
The Phillies continued their excellent form in game two of the series as well. Dominating the opposition in most departments of the game, the Phillies proved that they are one of the favourites to reach the World Series and win their second title. Cliff
Lee made a stunning come-back into the team as he struck-out 11 in seven innings to help his side take a decisive 2-0 lead.
"I can hear the noise, hear the volume," Lee said. "It felt good to know fans are excited to see me back. You try not to focus on it too much and get hitters out, but I gave myself a minute to notice it."
Putting up another brilliant performance in the third and final game, the Phillies completed their first series sweep of the season in an emphatic fashion. Phillies were favourites against New York Mets in their three match series. However, Munuel’s side
was unable to make the most of opportunities and they could post only a single run on the board. Mets secured a comfortable 7-1 win to take a 1-0 lead in the series.
However, with so many stars in their line-up, the Phillies bounced back brilliantly in game two to level the series. In game two, they demolished the Mets 11-0 to win yet another series. The Phillies continued to give superb performances throughout March
2011 and they finished the month with a phenomenal 18-8 win-loss record.
