Philadelphia Phillies: Regular season results for August – MLB 2011
With an impressive 68-39 win-loss record at the end of July, 2011, things were looking very bright for Philadelphia Phillies. Team manager, Charlie Manuel was hoping for another strong period of thirty days to cement Phillies’ position at the top of wild
card standings table. Securing twenty seven wins in their last thirty five games at the Major League, Phillies were looking on top of their game play.
In a three match series against Colorado Rockies, the Phillies looked in complete control in each aspect of the game. With their formidable attacking skills, the hitters put up a phenomenal show. The pitchers pitched with control and accuracy throughout
the series to restrict the opposition side to small totals. Even the catching unit played a crucial role in deciding the outcome of the series.
In game one, the Phillies held their nerves in a crunch encounter to take 1-0 lead in the series. Shane Victorino delivered when his side needed the most. Hitting a sensational home run in tie-breaking tenth innings, Victorino led his side to a memorable
win. “That meant more than anything,” Victorino said. “I got my at-bat because of what Mayberry did. That was a huge play.”
The Phillies completely dominated their rivals in second game to take a decisive 2-0 lead in the series. Kyle Kendrick was the star of the show as he tossed eight sparkling innings to lift the Phillies to their first series win of the month. Ryan Howard
led the batters pack as he homered twice in an impressive display of hitting. “It is what it is,” Kendrick said. “Everyone knows I can start. Oswalt coming back is going to make us better.”
“KK was very good,” Phillies manager, Charlie Manuel said. “This would rank up there with his best outing.”
With momentum on their side, the Phillies completed their first series sweep of the month in emphatic fashion. Ryan Howard was too hot to handle as he drove in four runs with a homer and double as the Phillies floored the Rockies 8-6 in third and final game.
“You've got to stay in the game,” Howard said. “I tried to do what I could to try to make up for it, and I was able to get a couple of key hits, some RBIs and get some runs back.”
The Phillies continued their impressive form in a four match series against San Francisco Giants as well. Wining three out of four games, they improved their win-loss record to 74-40. With series’ wins over Washington Nationals, New York Mets and Cincinnati
Reds, Charlie Manuel and his men ended the month on a very strong note.
