Philadelphia Phillies: Regular season results for September – MLB 2011
After reaching an impressive 86-46 win-loss record at the end of August, 2011, Philadelphia Phillies were looking to continue their good form in the month of September to make it to the World Series. Charlie Manuel and his men were extremely delighted with
the way they had responded to difficult situations during the regular season as they aimed to maintain their sensational form during the post season in an attempt to lift the Majors division title.
Crushing Cincinnati Reds 6-4 in fourth and final game of a four match series, the Phillies completed an incredible series sweep to top the wild card standings table. It was a stunning achievement by the leading NL East team bearing in mind the sort of beginning
the squad had to their regular season campaign.
Ryan Howard led the hitters pack as he hit his 30th homer of the season to take his side to a memorable 6-4 win over the Reds. In the pitching department, Vance Worley pitched with control and accuracy as he pitched into seventh innings and they
Phillies secured a thumping 4-0 series victory over the Reds.
“Everybody's playing well,” Howard said. “Atlanta's playing well. Milwaukee's playing well. The way I see it, we need to keep our foot on the gas and not let up.”
“Keep winning games,” Charlie Manuel said when asked about his goal as the season moved into September. “I'd like to see us win a lot of games -- run off a good streak where we could play a lot of those (bench) guys. We can win some more. We definitely want
to win the division and have the best record.”
The Phillies got off to a decent start in their next three match series against Florida Marlins. Not showing any signs of nerves, Charlie Manuel’s side displayed some high-quality baseball under pressure to emerge victorious 5-3 in a thrilling encounter.
Although they were unable to deliver the goods in following two games of the series, they stayed way ahead of their rivals in the wild card standings.
Regrouping themselves and showing amazing character and determination, the Phillies got off to a flying start in their next three match series against Atlanta Braves. Thrashing the Braves 9-0 in the opening game, the Phillies looked on top of their game
play. Cliff Lee was the star of show as he pitched a five hitter for his sixth win of the season and the Phillies eased past the Braves to take a 1-0 lead in the series.
The Phillies continued their commanding form in the following two games as well to secure their second series sweep of the month. With series’ wins over Florida Marlins and Atlanta Braves, they reached the World Series quite comfortably.
