Philadelphia Phillies’ Roy Halladay’s performance in 2011
Roy Halladay, without a doubt is the most valuable player in the Philadelphia Phillies line-up. There are high chances that he is also the most valuable player in the entire National League. Halladay is a vital part of the Phillies vaunted starting rotation
that is more than often termed to be the best in all of Major League Baseball.
2010 was quite the year for the ace pitcher as he unleashed a perfect game along with a post season no hitter against the Cincinnati Reds while taking along 21 wins with him. His outstanding National League debut got approval from everyone and anyone as
he bagged his second Cy Young Award.
This season, Halladay is 6-3 with a 2.21 ERA along with 80 strike-outs and four complete games. His numbers look almost similar to the ones he put up in 2010 but upon a closer look, he is actually doing better, if that was even possible. Halladay has allowed
three less runs and nine less hits this time around. The most impressive feat being that in the 77 innings pitched, he has a whopping 21 more strike-outs compared to last year. Statistically it means there has been an increase of 8.8K’s per inning this year
compared to 6.5K’s per inning, last year.
Halladay’s presence in the team has had a profound affect as the Phillies continued to struggle offensively without their star hitter and five times All Star, Chase Utley. During that period, Halladay led the team and was flawless on the mound giving almost
no opportunity to the opposing team batters to hit.
Roy has pitched 77.1 innings so far which are the highest in the National League. His ERA of 2.21 is the sixth best and his WHIP of 0.98 is the second highest in the already competitive National League. If he isn’t at the top of every pitching category available,
he is near the very top. It looks like it won’t be long before the pitcher beats his career best 291 strike-outs from last year.
The Phillies, on average are expected to score three runs per game and instead of being discouraged by the low run support from his team; he embraces the fact and kicks up his game by a notch to make sure that he covers up for whatever his team lacks. Halladay
has a knack for limiting errors and makes no room for damage to be done.
This time in the world of Major League Baseball, is known as the Era of the Pitchers. So in this Era of Pitchers, there is absolutely no one who comes above the Doc, Roy Halladay. A great starting pitcher is of vital importance to win a game but Halladay
has proved that it holds much more importance to the team’s pitching staff as well as the entire ball club.
Halladay is one of the few pitchers who are reliable at all times. He has never failed to produce and stays healthy as well. Doc’s fierce desire to win is lethal but that doesn’t compromise on his solid character. He left more money on the table but fulfilled
his wish to come play for the Phillies, who could not be any luckier to have the great Halladay around.
