Philadelphia Phillies’ Ryan Howard on the verge of exclusion - MLB News
Ryan Howard, one of the powerful pull hitters in the Philadelphia Phillies has met with an ankle injury putting his inclusion in the side on hold for an indefinite time period. Surprisingly enough, he is one of the only players who crossed the 100 and 200
home-run mark the quickest in baseball history, is not going to affect the Phillies’ chances in the season.
Trainer Scott Sheridan said, “I don't prefer to use that word (setback). “I think that we never established a particular time frame for him, and right now it's one of those things that happens in the rehab process and we'll have to move forward from there.”
Ready to play for Clearwater on Wednesday, the infection near his ankle where Dr. Mark Myerson in October had already treated his torn Achilles marred his chances to make an appearance. Against the backdrop of promising progress in the camp last week, he
can be one of the surprise performers in the coming weeks.
The sutures employed by Myerson, to cure the injury in the first place did not dissolve as expected and that aggravated his injury. Thus the doctor had to eliminate them and veil the wound by prescribing antibiotics to Howard.
Although Howard had regular appointments with the doctor, certain unfortunate events led to the severity of his injury, effectively putting him out for weeks if not the months. “He couldn't project whether it would be a few days or a few weeks before Howard
could return to action, but the team is likely to be conservative,” Sheridan believes.
Eager to make an impact, he had been undergoing rigorous training, hitting and fielding practices. Handicapped by the injury, he can only wait now until he recovers completely to add to the team’s performance, an aspiration he worked so hard to see materialised.
Had it been not for the wounds that were not healing, he perhaps will be a hot contender for the season now.
One of the positives he can take heart from is the fact Myerson after the inspection has found his cured Achilles intact, meaning it will not take too long before he joins the squad again.
