Philadelphia Phillies acquire Ben Revere through trade with Minnesota Twins - MLB Update
Philadelphia Phillies has traded Vance Worley and Trevor May in order to fill their vacant spot in the outfield. Centre fielder, Ben Revere has joined the Phillies as the Twins unload him from their roster.
Phillies are searching for outfielders since the beginning of the offseason.
It was expected they will spend some money in the free agent market and hire an outfielder. So far they have failed to fetch someone from the market owing to various reasons.
The Phillies are not alone in their need of the outfielders.
Atlanta Braves, Washington Nationals and the San Francisco Giants were among other teams that were looking for an outfielder at the start of the offseason.
As a result, some of the free agents were bought before the Phillies could approach them.
B.J. Upton was among the few outfielders that could fulfil the criteria of Philadelphia. As Atlanta signed a contract with him, an option for them disappeared from the market.
Then they had to shift their attention and see if the remaining free agent outfielders Michael Bourn and Josh Hamilton can be acquired by them.
Having not been able to make any headway in this regard, trade of their relievers for the desired position player was considered a best option by the Phillies.
Addition of Revere can strengthen the offence of Philadelphia, besides helping the team defensively.
He can hit consistently and more importantly his incredible speed can help him steal bases. Even in the last season, he accumulated an impressive number of stolen bases.
General Manager for the Phillies, Ruben Amaro Jr. has spoken highly about Revere. Especially the fact he is young provides Amaro an ample reason to think he will be successful in the outfield next year.
"Ben is an outstanding, young, controllable center fielder who fits nicely with our club," Ruben Amaro Jr. said.
The deal is in many ways advantageous for the club. Without spending a huge amount of money, they have acquired an extremely talented young player.
The cost of losing two relievers is not as much, because the team already has a long list of young arms available in their farm system.
Revere will be excited about joining a new club. It will be interesting to see how he accepts challenges ahead and rises up to them.
