Philadelphia Phillies add Michael Young on roster through trade with Texas Rangers-MLB Update
Finally, the trade deal between Texas Rangers and Philadelphia Phillies involving Michael Young has been confirmed. The infielder will be manning the third base for the Phillies from now onward.
As per sources, the Rangers did not make the decision of getting rid of their seven-time All Star player easily. They had to go through serious deliberations before reaching the conclusion.
Young played for the Rangers all through his career. He has been the part and parcel of laurels achieved by the organisation in the last more than a half a decade.
Some of the officials of the Rangers have regretted his exclusion from the roster. After so many years in the team, deep bonds had been developed between him and the teammates.
Only reason the Rangers could not retain him is the genuine need to adjust the roster and make it competitive enough to achieve something substantial next year.
The fact of the matter is that the Texas needed relievers who could strengthen their bullpen. The infielders were already available in a reasonable quantity to them. That made the trade of Young as a necessity for the organisation.
Another reason that might not be claimed officially, though, is the fact that Young is declining after every year. He has reached such a part of his age where it is easy to term his last season campaign as the beginning toward an end.
The Rangers might turn out to be clever enough to comprehend his weakness before it really becomes visible after some years. That might have motivated them to go ahead with the deal and ship him to the Phillies.
While the Rangers may draw benefits from the trade down the line, the Phillies have their own reasons to be satisfied.
For example, with the part of Young’s salary to be paid by the Texas, the Phillies have acquired him at an extremely low price. At the same time, they believe, along with Chase Utley and Ryan Howard, he can deliver valuable offensive contributions next year.
The Phillies’ General Manager, Ruben Amaro Jr. propounds the view that Young is an excellent addition in the team. Despite having an unimpressive 2012 season, he is optimistic about his future expeditions with Philadelphia.
"Clearly, this brings a wonderful package to what we're trying to do here in Philadelphia," Ruben Amaro Jr. said. "One, he's a very, very good ballplayer. He has a tremendous track record. I know that last year was not his best year but after talking to
the scouts and discussing it intently with the rest of our front office, we felt like this is an excellent person to bring to our club."
Young will be aware of the challenges ahead and how to meet them. It will be fascinating to see him wear the Phillies’ uniform for the first time in his career.
