Philadelphia Phillies are blanked 0-3 by Toronto Blue Jays as Mike Fontenot makes error - MLB
A dismal show continues by the Philadelphia Phillies as third baseman Mike Fontenot’s error cost the club 0-3 defeat against the Toronto Blue Jays on June 15, 2012 in first game of the three match series at Rogers Centre, Toronto, Ontario.
Injuries keep haunting the Phillies’ prospects in the season as catcher Carlos Ruiz becomes a latest in the list. He was struck by strained muscle and was taken off the park during the game.
Misery of the injuries apart, a rather troubling fact for Phillies is that the players holding position on the park have been poor in making plays.
Not long ago, third-baseman Ty Wigginton, who came to replace an injured Plácido Polanco, made number of errors resulting into a defeat for the side.
So huge was the cost that the Phillies announced another replacement, Mike Fontenot at third-base, in place of Wigginton, to make sure run-leakages from this area are avoided.
Unfortunately, things had to grow worse before taking turn for the better as on Friday the Phillies were disappointed again, with errors emanating from third base and runs being conceded.
Vance Worley started for the Phillies. In seven innings, he conceded three runs. The fact out of three runs he allowed two were unearned takes chunk of the blame off him, bringing the role of fielders in discussion.
"It's almost like a bug, if anything," Vance Worley stated. "A lot of us are doing what we need to do to make sure we're in shape to play and things are just kind of spiraling out of control."
Worley was pleased with his performance. He talked of sharp improvements he observed in his throws on Friday, after being roughed up in number of games before.
"That's probably the best I've felt so far coming back," said Worley. "I got my pitch count up and the ball was doing what I wanted it to do."
Just five hits coming off from Phillies was another reminder of loopholes in their offence. Both centre fielder Shane Victorino and first baseman Ty Wigginton were hitless.
As it was first game of the series, the Phillies will be looking to win the next game and assert themselves for contention.
