Philadelphia Phillies beat Arizona Diamondbacks 7-2 at Chase Field - MLB Update
Starter Cole Hamels’ solid eight innings ensure the Philadelphia Phillies a 7-2 win over Arizona Diamondbacks on April 25, 2012 at Chase Field in Phoenix, Arizona.
In a rare scene in the season, Phillies witnessed their offence backing-up the pitchers.
One of their pitchers with least run support in the past had a different day on the mound. Seven strike-outs Hamels drew and just two runs given up were amply supported by 13 hits the Phillies brought in the win.
"When you're about to go out there and just plug away, have some quick at-bats, you do get into a comfortable rhythm," Hamels said. "You want to go out there and have great inning after great inning."
Third baseman Placido Polanco improves his batting average to .237 after seeing a drought of hits in the season. He went 3-for-3 and completed two runs.
Sixth inning run-rampage by the Phillies effectively took the game away from the Diamondbacks. The main architects of the damage were Hunter Pence, Polanco and Carlos Ruiz. All three of them added one, two and one run respectively.
The manager was relieved after the victory, taking it as a huge plus for the games ahead. Hoping to build the journey for a potential postseason spot from now onward, he feels the side has regained the kind of confidence they needed at this time of the season.
"We're going home 5 and 5, which is better than 4 and 6," Manuel said. "The old saying is if you go .500 on the road and win at home you'll be in the playoffs. I'm not sure I buy it, but that's what they say."
Starter Trevor Cahill was roughed up at the start of the sixth inning and thus was immediately taken off the mound. In little more than five innings, he gave up four runs and brought three strike-outs for the Diamondbacks.
The reliever following him did not receive any mercy either and just when he will start finding his control on the mound, Phillies had drawn two runs from him. Thus, he was also replaced with another one.
Phillies will look to build on their victory in upcoming games and take this time as an opportunity to launch a recovery after having poor start of the season.
