Philadelphia Phillies beat Cincinnati Reds 4-3 as John Mayberry Jr. singles in eleventh-MLB Update
The pinch hitter John Mayberry Jr. singles to left in the eleventh as the Philadelphia Phillies edge Cincinnati Reds 4-3 at Citizens Bank Park, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in the last game of the four match series on August 23, 2012.
The Reds were leading by one run from the start. Their lead remained intact until the end of the seventh inning. However it was not substantial enough and a couple of good innings by the Phillies would have blown it easily.
Therefore, Cincinnati needed a greater number of runs on the scoreboard in order to keep the Phillies from bouncing back.
As the Reds failed to do so, Philadelphia rightly exploited this by adding one run in the bottom of the eighth they tied the score. Hence they made the opposition play additional innings.
The game took an interesting turn when the tenth inning finished scoreless. It was the time when either side was equally poised for winning the game. Under pressure making connections and sending the base runners aboard was difficult.
Fortunately for the Phillies, their pinch hitter John Mayberry Jr. struck for a single and allowed Chase Utley to reach home plate. As a result, he helped the team record an incredible victory.
Meanwhile, Phillies’ starter Cole Hamels was unimpressive on Thursday. Despite the fact Philadelphia won, he did not earn the victory. He gave up three runs in six innings and struck-out four.
"I was frustrated starting the game when it rains," Hamels said. "I don't think it should ever happen. They have radar detectors."
In contrast to him, the relief pitcher Raul Valdes threw an impeccable last inning of the game as he recorded the win.
Meanwhile, Phillies’ manager Charlie Manuel talks about the twists and turns that happened in the game. He was growing uneasy when the base-runners were not reaching home-plate.
"I feel like I was in a fight, and I lost," Manuel said. "I feel drained. I kept waiting for somebody to come home."
Phillies improve on the National League East Division table as they hold the third position now. They will be looking to carry the momentum forward in the upcoming games.
