Philadelphia Phillies beat Detroit Tigers 4-3 in 2012 Spring Training - MLB Update
Freddy Galvis asserts his position as a likely replacement for injured Chase Utley as he leads Philadelphia Phillies to a 4-3 win against Detroit Tigers on March 19, 2012 at Bright House Networks in Clearwater, Florida in their Grapefruit League contest.
He faced three at-bats and contributed two RBIs while completing one run. Jimmy Rollins, their shortstop also brought one RBI in three at-bats.
Jim Thome, who was sent as designated hitter did not live up to his role as he missed both of his at-bats.
From the start, Tigers had a one run lead and even in third inning it further substantiated to three. Just when it started looking as they will record an easy victory, an amazing upsurge was launched from Phillies’ side. In fourth inning, Phillies managed
four runs, going past Tigers’ three run lead.
Phillies saw their second baseman Chase Utley on the verge of missing the regular season. As he will start season as being on disabled list, his knee injury can even prolong to an extent of having him miss the whole season.
"I would think it would be doubtful for him to be prepared to play second base for us on opening day," said Phillies’ general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. "Really this is about making sure he's healthy and playing a significant amount of the season so whatever
time it takes for him to feel confident about his knees, that's the important part, whether it's tomorrow or the next week."
What Phillies will be most happy about in the game is their reliever Joe Savery. He threw two scoreless innings and grabbed three strike-outs while being hit once.
However they were let down by their starter Scott Elarton, who though brought four strike-outs was hammered three hits and three earned runs.
So far Spring Training has not been that great for Phillies with nine losses out of 17 games they have played. The fact however that today they won against a side which tops the Grapefruit League table, their confidence for next games is going to be extremely
high. They will be looking forward to keep their momentum going in big games down the line.
