Philadelphia Phillies beat Los Angeles Dodgers 3-2 as Roy Halladay shows command - MLB Update
Starter Roy Halladay strikes-out six in five innings as the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 3-2 at Dodger Stadium, Los Angeles in the second game of the three match series on July 17, 2012.
Besides Halladay, Kyle Kendrick threw a tremendous spell of little more than one inning. He earned the win as he protected the Phillies' lead at a time when it was needed the most.
It was a low scoring game, with the Dodgers maintaining lead for most part.
It was the start of the eighth when Philadelphia bounced back and pulled off a stunning victory.
Meanwhile, the Phillies were fortunate to find their relievers keeping the lead intact. While generally they are prone to leaking runs late in the innings, on Tuesday they were impressive as they threw scoreless innings.
Before the start of the second half of the season, the weak bullpen was a major concern for the Phillies’ manager Charlie Manuel. As the relief pitchers had cost them defeats, he was looking to make sure they put up improved shows in the second half.
In this respect, Charlie will be content with the way they fared on Tuesday.
Another positive coming off in the game for Philadelphia was the command that their ace Halladay showed on the mound. Since he played the first game after going through a lengthy rehab process for around two months, his throws were under the scan of the
management.
Therefore, one can understand the happiness that he expressed after completing a quality spell of innings later in the game.
Commenting on the position that the Phillies hold on the table right now, he said that irrespective of their chances, his job is to bring as many wins as he can.
"I feel good and I feel like I can contribute. If I didn't, I wouldn't have tried to pitch tonight," said Halladay. "Anybody who likes to compete wants to be out there, regardless if you're 15 games down in the standings or 15 up."
Offensively, the Phillies relied on Hunter Pence and Chase Utley. The victory was the second in a row by the Phillies and they will be looking to complete a sweep by winning the last game of the series.
