Philadelphia Phillies beat San Diego Padres 7-3 at Citizens Bank Park - MLB Update
Catcher Carlos Ruiz slams a homer in the fourth as the Philadelphia Phillies record a 7-3 victory against the San Diego Padres at Citizens Bank Park, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in the first game of three-match series on May 11, 2012.
Phillies put aside what happened with them against the New York Mets and their first sweep since 2006.
Their relievers who have been a curse in their defeats did a terrific job in the game.
After their starter Vance Worley gave up three runs in six innings, relievers threw three scoreless innings. Perhaps, this was the difference which was missing in their last few games.
As regard to their offence, one can observe that it has come a long way from its miseries at the start of the season. After all, almost every game they have played in the last week has seen fireworks coming off from their hitters.
Right fielder, Hunter Pence has all of a sudden started finding right connections. Couple of homers and a flurry of RBIs coming through his bat for the moment, has made the management forget about offence and turn attention to other areas of their weakness.
He is hitting .256/.297/.481.
The Phillies' manager, Charlie Manuel talked about the latest win of his side. Expressing satisfaction, he aims to start a new journey from now onward.
"We came out tonight and we played better than they did and won the game," Manuel said. "When you win, you always have confidence. Nobody likes to lose. Losing is a downer. That's how we look at it. It's always good to win."
Ruiz has been a major force behind recent re-birth by the Phillies’ offence.
He went 3-for-3 and added three RBIs, something that has taken his on-base-percentage to .381 and slugging percentage to .606.
"I think we needed that," Ruiz said. "Charlie said a lot good things and we thought about it right after the meeting. I think it was right, and we didn't show too much energy. Today, we saw a little more, so that's good."
Phillies’ position on the table apart, there is nothing that can negate their ability to pull off victories out of nowhere. Once they have their confidence back, they can become as formidable as any other side in the Division.
