Philadelphia Phillies beaten by Pittsburgh Pirates 4-5 – MLB Recap
The Philadelphia Phillies lost to the Pittsburgh Pirates 4-5 in the fourth and final game of their four-game regular series encounter on Thursday, June 28 at Citizens Bank Park in 2012 Major League Baseball season.
A.J. Burnett played well and proved one of the key winning factors for the Pirates. He pitched 6.2 innings and received three runs on six hits along with three earned runs. He struck-out seven as his ERA remained consistent at 3.31.
"I was really impressed with McKenry, He was outstanding. I can't say enough about him. It was a pleasure to work with him. He picked up where Rod left off." Burnett said with confidence and explained about his brilliant outing.
First baseman Casey McGehee also played well for the Pirates as he hit a three-run homer in the very first inning.
"I think at one point I was trying to do too much, I was with a new team trying to make a good impression. Then I went back to just trying to hit the ball up the middle of the field." McGehee said.
Later Pirates' manager Clint Hurdle said, "We got some tough outs from Grilli and Joel."
Phillies’ starter Kyle Kendrick could not show his brilliance with the ball. He was hammered with five runs and six hits along with five earned runs as his ERA rose to 5.35.
"Gave us a chance to win, pitched deep into the game, which they needed me to, We came up short." Kendrick said.
The Pirates went early into the lead and later defended their five run advantage with complete precision.
Their pitchers especially Burnett never gave any chance to the Phillies’ batters to take advantage and play freely. He tossed over six innings spell and helped his team win the game with ease.
Phillies, with this defeat, now standing at the bottom of National League East with 36-42 win-loss record along with a .462 winning percentage.
The mid season break is approaching fast, but the Phillies’ poor condition is giving them an alarming situation that they must come up with a new strategy to compete in the race towards post-season qualification.
