Philadelphia Phillies clinch 7-5 victory against Detroit Tigers at Spring Training - MLB Update
Philadelphia Phillies put aside the initial runs given away by their starting pitcher Roy Halladay to post a 7-5 victory against Detroit Tigers at Joker Marchant Stadium in Lakeland, Florida during their Spring Training Grapefruit League clash on March 9,
2012.
Tigers kept their lead until the fourth and even at one stage went on to give an impression of game being one-sided before late upsurge by Phillies proved disastrous for them. Finding scapegoats after the loss is not tough for Tigers as pitchers Adam Wilk
and David Pauley together gave up seven runs in handing Phillies a convincing victory.
Poor show by Wilk and Pauley can easily consol Halladay as they have helped his performance get overshadowed in the midst. Having a fairly forgettable day he allowed three runs and that too against a batter who is not part of Tigers' official 40-man roster,
Eric Patterson.
"I feel like everything is going good," Halladay said. "I have just been inconsistent so far. I only made two mistakes and they were to the same guy. I feel like I have a long way to go, but I am not concerned."
The fact he has just played two games as yet, it is premature to make any judgment about how he will stand up in regular season. After all he is one of the greatest prospects for Phillies going into the season.
"I didn't see anything wrong," Phillies’ manager Charlie Manuel said. "I just have to look at his numbers from last year."
Chunk of damage done to Tigers' late-innings pitchers unfolded from Lou Montanez' bat as he added two runs while connecting two out of three at-bats he faced. Lead was effectively substantiated by a couple of more hits coming off Carlos Ruiz, who also grabbed
three RBIs and off Michael Martinez who added one more run to the score.
Meanwhile, Tigers are pleased by their starting pitcher Max Scherzer who spent over three innings on the mound and gave away just one hit.
Phillies now stand at four wins and three losses in Spring Training. Beating the strongest side as per table standings will lift their confidence immensely as now they see their table PCT improve to .571.
