Philadelphia Phillies come from behind to defeat Toronto Blue Jays 7-6 – MLB Update
The Philadelphia Phillies came from behind to down the Toronto Blue Jays 7-6 in an electrifying first outing of their three-game series, at the Rogers Centre in Toronto on Friday, July 1.
Phillies had gone under 2-0 in the first inning but their batters awakened at the right time and blistered one RBI each in the second and third inning to tie it at 2-all. Their starter Kyle Kendrick stopped the Blue Jays and provided some further chances
to his batters but he went a little wobbly in the bottom of the fifth inning.
He tossed a sloppy pitch to Eric Thames, who touched it for a 427-feet long two-run homer to take the Blue Jays again into a leading position, this time with 4-2. However, the Blue Jays could not enjoy this lead even for a single inning as the Phillies’
Carlos Ruiz drove in an RBI single in the top of the sixth inning to reduce it to 4-3.
Then in the next inning, Shane Victorino touched a tying single and Ben Francisco hit a sacrifice fly to advance his club to a 5-4 lead. However, the Blue Jays did not prove a kind of team who let the game go so easily, as they retaliated again in the seventh
inning. This time Jose Bautista, who is currently leading the Majors with 26 homers, launched a dazzling 414-feet long two-run home-run and put his team at 6-5.
Until then, the Blue Jays’ manager John Farrell had employed their fresh reliever Jon Rauch in place of starter Ricky Romero. Rauch acted as per the expectations of his manager and tossed a shut-out eighth inning to restrict the Phillies under 6-5. In the
ninth inning, the Phillies’ Ryan Howard blistered a hard line drive double and the Philadelphia won their 52nd game of the season.
The Phillies’ ace Kyle Kendrick went loose in his seven innings, allowing six runs on eight hits and walking one. He also made five strike-outs but failed to win the game, as his reliever Danys Baez won his second game. He threw one no-hit inning to improve
his record to 2-3 with a 5.35 ERA.
Closer Antonio Bastardo escaped in the ninth inning to get his fourth save of the season.
It will not be difficult for the Phillies to turn the 1-0 lead into 2-0, as their pitcher for the next game is Roy Halladay, who is one of the toughest hurlers of this season.
