Philadelphia Phillies continue negotiations with Chicago Cubs for Alfonso Soriano - MLB Update
Philadelphia Phillies keep their focus on acquiring an outfielder that has power and boasts reasonable defensive credentials.
As per reports, they are engaged in talks with the Chicago Cubs for Alfonso Soriano.
The Phillies are looking for someone, who can ensure home-runs on a regular basis.
Soriano is an ideal candidate in this respect, but the fact his inclusion may require shipment of some quality prospects to the Cubs, can make it difficult for the Phillies to clinch the trade deal.
Phillies have already sent some of their arms to the Minnesota Twins in the trade related to Ben Revere.
Though Revere is also an outfielder, he is not a powerful hitter, which leaves some loop-holes for the club to fix before the upcoming season.
Revere is more of a run manufacturer than someone, who can strike mammoth home-runs and lead the team to wins single-handedly.
For the same reason, the Phillies are not satisfied even as they have included him on the roster.
Philadelphia could add some quality outfielders from the outset of the offseason, but they were hesitant of spending money in the market.
They lost B.J. Upton and Cody Ross to other organisations despite going through negotiations with them.
As per the officials of the club, they did not want to offer anything more than the actual worth of the free agents.
From day one, the narrative within the organisation of the Phillies is that free agents this year are not extra-ordinary players and that being extravagant in the market is risky.
Understandably so, they relied more on trade options than signing free agents to address issues with their roster.
Continuing with their strategy of filling vacant spots on the roster through trades, they are under negotiations with the Cubs.
They are looking to persuade the organisation for obtaining Soriano.
The fact Soriano has a tremendous record as a hitter shows that he can fulfil requirements of the Phillies.
He struck a sufficient number of home-runs during the last season, apart from compiling 108 RBIs.
The next couple of days are going to be important for Soriano as he may be traded to the Phillies.
