Philadelphia Phillies defeat Arizona Diamondbacks 8-4 – MLB Update
Philadelphia Phillies put in a good performance as they defeated Arizona Diamondbacks 8-4 at Chase Field, Phoenix on Wednesday, April 27.
The performance of the Phillies in their last two games must have been a source of disappointment and worry for the team and their fans as well. After their four game sweep of the San Diego Padres, the Phillies haven’t impressed any one by being defeated
by the Arizona Diamondbacks in two consecutive games. Their two game losses also marks the second series they have lost since the season began.
The wheels have finally turned around as they managed to finally win against Arizona on Wednesday. The eight runs scored by Philadelphia is quite an improvement from their last performances. Since the season started, the Phillies haven’t managed to score
more than four runs in their games. It seems that the Phillies have realised that even with one of the best pitching rotations in all of Major League Baseball history, you need runs to win a game as well.
Cole Hamels definitely played a vital part in securing the victory as he pitched seven solid back-to-back innings. "I don't necessarily think it was a pick up," said Hamels, who threw 100 pitches for the fourth straight start. "You're not going to have good
games all the time, but just knowing these are some of the best pitchers in the game and you have to go out and pick up your end of the bargain."
The Phillies’ pitchers previously did not perform as expected. In the first game, the flawless Cliff Lee was outpitched by Ian Kennedy as he shut down his start. Roy Oswalt gave up one too many runs and couldn’t manage to win.
"Anytime you hit, you feel good about yourself," Phillies’ manager Charlie Manuel said.
Jimmy Rollins doubled towards the left-field as Shane Victorino scored and Placido Polanco moved towards the third base in the very first inning. Two more runs came in the first innings as Ben Francisco belted a double to the deep left-field and Polanco
and Rollins ended up scoring. In the very next inning Victorino unleashed a home-run to left centre-field that went on for 390 feet. Another run came for the Phillies in the fifth inning as Rollins hit another home-run that went on for 400 feet and Polanco
scored. The seventh inning once again saw Polanco scoring as Brian Schneider walked and Ryan Howard and Ben Francisco moved towards third and second base respectively. Ryan Howard hit another home-run for the Phillies to wrap up the match.
From the Diamondbacks, Melvin Mora doubled to left-field and Drew scored as Chris Young managed to unleash two home-runs, one in the sixth inning and another in the eighth inning.
