Philadelphia Phillies defeat Atlanta Braves 5-4 – MLB Update
Philadelphia Phillies put in a good performance and managed to defeat the Atlanta Braves 5-4 at Turner Field, Atlanta on Friday, May 13.
The trouble started for Atlanta from the beginning when Brandon Beachy came out to pitch against Philadelphia. The loaded bases for the Phillies allowed Ryan Howard to come down hard on Beachy. Howard struck a massive hit that resulted in an exhilarating
three-run homer, giving a favourable 3-0 lead to the Phillies.
Chipper Jones scored the first single for Atlanta in the next inning on Cole Hamels seemingly vulnerable pitching. Jones singled to right to bring the score down to 3-1 for the Braves. There was a drought of runs up until the fourth inning where both teams
did not allow each other to increase the lead.
The Braves levelled the score in the fifth inning with a brilliant two-run homer of Cristhian Martinez. It could not have come at a perfect time given the wild cheer that it stirred in the crowd. Atlanta hardly stopped there and made Hamels pay once again
in the sixth inning. Diory Hernandez scored another amazing single to give a 4-3 lead to the Braves. Atlanta looked comfortable in the lead as the game was leaning in their favour.
However, the Phillies made a strong come-back to level the score in the seventh inning. Shane Victorino singled to centre on Cory Gearrin’s fastball to score the tying run. Atlanta, which was earlier having a clear lead in the game had to switch to a combination
of young pitchers to at least maintain the tie until one of their hitters could get a hit.
First it was J.C. Romero who succeeded in limiting the score. After his success, Raul Ibanez hit a much needed score for the Phillies that finally brought them back to the leading position. Having scored a 5-4 lead, the Phillies then switched to Vance Worley
who contained the Braves’ hitters.
Ryan Madson finally sealed the victory for the Phillies in the ninth inning. He was tremendously successful in the last inning of the game to maintain the Phillies’ lead and eventually give a 5-4 victory to his team against the Braves.
It will be interesting to see how the Phillies can carry their winning momentum into their next games of the season. The Braves will be looking to improve their offensive performance on the field.
