Philadelphia Phillies defeat Colorado Rockies 4-3 in series-opener – MLB Update
John Mayberry Jr. tied in the ninth and Shane Victorino showed his command over the swings as he hit a granular homer to help the Philadelphia Phillies take a 4-3 walk off win over the Colorado Rockies in the tenth inning of the three-game series-opener
at Coors Field in Denver on Monday, August 1.
The Major League’s leading club Phillies were under a 3-1 deficit until the start of the ninth inning, but Pinch hitter Mayberry worked his part with a two-run homer off the Rockies’ closer Huston Street in the top of the ninth to tie the game at 3-all.
Shane Victorino entered for his fifth at-bat and launched a dazzling one-run homer off Ryan Madson to give a blow to Rockies’ camp.
Rockies had gained an early two-run lead in the bottom of the second inning with the help of a ballistic homer by Seth Smith off the Phillies’ starter Cole Hamels. However, after this inning, Hamels made a stunning rebound and held the Rockies scoreless
in his next six innings. Rockies succeed in making their second run against Phillies’ reliever Michael Stutes, who failed to carry the brilliancy expressed by Hamels.
Despite two runs in the bottom of the second inning, Hamels did not consume any run and managed to strike-out five batters over his six innings. His six allowed hits restrained him from getting 13th win of the season. However, his reliever Antonio
Bastardo tossed a stormy one inning to get his fifth win of the season without any loss while posting 1.31 ERA. Ryan Madson also performed at his highest level to grab his 19th win of the season.
Rockies’ starter Jhoulys Chacin could not get his ninth win despite throwing gritty sinkers and granular swings over his seven innings. He allowed only one run on six hits and struck-out two batters over his 101 pitches with 3.38 ERA. Matt Reynolds got his
15th hold while Rafael Betancourt got his 19th hold.
The real problem came in the ninth inning when Huston Street replaced Betancourt, as the Phillies’ bat took full advantage of Huston’s wobbly pitches. Then Rex Brothers added fuel, allowing a walk off homer to Victorino to drop his club to their 51st
loss of the season.
