Philadelphia Phillies defeat Florida Marlins 3-2 – MLB Update
Philadelphia Phillies put in a brilliant performance as they defeated Florida Marlins 3-2 at Citizens Bank Park, Philadelphia on Sunday, April 17.
Logan Morrison, the left-fielder for the Marlins made the error in the beginning of the eighth inning as he missed an important catch. Morrison was careful in playing towards the left centre of the field given the Marlins were protecting the bases for an
extra-hit.
Ryan Webb allowed a single to Ben Francisco and Ryan Madson took over for Cole Hamels. Jose Contreras barely made it in the ninth inning, as he managed three saves within three chances.
Given that he missed the catch, Morrison was particularly dissatisfied with his performance. "It was off the edge of my glove," he said. "I was playing no doubles back in left-center field, so it was a long run, but it's a play that has to be made."
In the ninth inning, Contreras let two batters walk and allowed the runners from Florida to reach second and third base safely. Contreras was successful in getting Omar Infante to the ground in the third base as he wrapped up the game.
"Anytime you win the game, it's good," Phillies manager Charlie Manuel said. "Whether you win ugly or win beautiful, it's positive. It's always positive when you're winning."
From Philadelphia’s side, Placido Polanco hit a home-run which barely made it to the seats in right-field. Another single later made him 7 for 13 against Sanchez. Anibal Sanchez allowed two runs in the first inning. Jimmy Rollins was successful against Bucks
throwing error as he walked, stole second base and made his way to third base. Ibanez made it 2-0 after a single.
After Ibanez had singled, Sanchez pitched for six innings and in the duration managed to give up another four hits.
Hamels performed well by striking-out six batters out of the 10 that he had to face. In the duration of the starting five innings he gave up only two hits. "I felt good early, and even later," Hamels said. "I was able to make pitches for the most part."
Philadelphia went on to secure a positive 3-2 victory over the Florida Marlins. It will be interesting to see how the Phillies carry their winning momentum into their next match-up. The Marlins put in a decent performance, but it was not enough to prevent
the error which led to Phillies victory.
