Philadelphia Phillies defeat Florida Marlins 5-4 – MLB Update
Shane Victorino made a game-tier double and Carlos Ruiz touched a leading single as the Philadelphia Phillies overpowered the League rivals Florida Marlins 5-4, in the second of the two games played at Citizens Park, on Wednesday June 15.
"Things happen for you when you're going good," Phillies’ manager Charlie Manuel said. "Things definitely work in your favour and they go for you."
The Phillies were trailing 4-2 until before the bottom of the ninth inning and the game was about to end with their loss but centre-fielder Victorino entered the plate for his fifth at-bat and drove in a line drive double off the Marlins’ reliever Leo Nunez
to tie the game at 4-all. This forced the game into extra inning, at the top of which the Phillies closer Ryan Madson tossed a perfect inning to give his batters a chance to take the game back to their side.
The batters initially struggled against the Marlins’ closer Mike Dunn as he took Placido Polanco on a fly out and Raul Ibanez on a strike-out but he went a little wobbly in the later part of the inning. He allowed a walk to Domonic Brown and allowed Ryan
Howard to steal second base and then he gave the game ending line drive single to Ruiz.
The National League’s current leaders, Phillies gained their 43rd win of the season. The Phillies’ exceptional starter Roy Halladay did not have a good day as he gave four runs on six hits, however struck-out eight batters over seven innings spell. Although,
Halladay could not turn the game into his tenth win, still he leads the Majors with a 9-3 record and a 2.56 ERA in 15 starts.
"He does so much behind the plate and often doesn't get a lot of credit," Halladay said. "For him to have a game-changing moment like that you like to see it. He certainly deserves it."
The Marlins’ starter Anibal Sanchez gave just two runs on four hits and struck-out six batters but remained winless in his 14th start. His reliever Randy Choate gave him a perfect back up in the eighth inning and took out two batters. However,
in the ninth Nunez gave two runs and Dunn allowed single in the tenth that sent the Marlins for their 36th loss of the season.
Marlins’ Logan Morrison scored an RBI single and Gaby Sanchez hammered the only home-run of the game in the top of the first inning but all went to waste due to wobbly pitching. Catcher John Buck also made a RBI double contribution in the fourth inning.
