Philadelphia Phillies defeat Florida Marlins 9-1 in series opener – MLB Update
The National League’s current leader Philadelphia Phillies kept their previous impetus and launched five homers to crush the Florida Marlins 9-1 in the four-game series-opener, at Citizens Bank Park on Tuesday, June 14.
The Phillies put in a brilliant team performance as, starter Cole Hamels allowed only one run on three hits over seven innings spell. He allowed only run in the top of the first inning but after this, he recuperated in a great fashion and took out six of
the Marlins’ important batters.
Hamels tossed 99 pitches to take his ninth win of the season with a 2.49 ERA. He is currently leading the Majors with a 9-2 record.
As Cole restricted the Marlins’ bat, the Phillies blistered five homers to achieve their 41st win of the season. First baseman Ryan Howard hammered a huge two-run homer off the Marlins’ starter Chris Volstad in the bottom of the sixth inning to start the
five-homer game. In the third inning, Chase Utley hit a two-run homer while Dominic Brown launched a one-run homer in the fourth inning to take the lead to 5-1.
Despite the fact that Volstad gave three homers, the Marlins’ manager Edwin Rodriguez did not replaced him with other pitcher. The move did not work out for the Marlins as Volstad gave an RBI single in the fifth and another homer in the sixth. After this
homer, Edwin replaced expensive pitcher with reliever Edward Mujica, who failed to escape the powerful swing of Dominic Brown.
Brown launched a devastating one-run homer in the bottom of the seventh inning and took his club into 9-1 irrefutable position. By this time, Hamels held the Marlins to just one run and then handed the ball to closer David Herndon. The 25-year-old pitcher
carried the path set by Hamels and struck-out two batters without allowing any run, as he gave three hits over two innings.
"I just got tight. I do not think that it is smart to compete not at my best. I just wanted to play it smart." Hamels said. "Everyone jumps on the bandwagon when they see the Ws, but all that matters is we're winning as a team. The individual won-loss record
is not important."
Volstad, on the other hand, was not happy with his own performance and said, "Obviously I didn't help. We just have to battle."
Chris gave eight runs on ten hits including four home-runs and two walks over five innings. Reliever Mujica also gave one homer over one inning while closer Steve Cishek managed to escape with no run in the last inning.
