Philadelphia Phillies defeat New York Mets 6-4 in 9th inning – MLB Update
The team with the best pitching rotation in all of Major League Baseball, the Philadelphia Phillies were successful in defeating their historical rivals, the New York Mets 6-4 by unleashing a hitting spree throughout the ninth inning in the first of the
three game series at Citi Field on May 27.
The Phillies had a point to prove this time around as they had previously dropped their last four road games. Domonic Brown surely helped them do that, as he belted out a perfectly timed ground-out single in the last inning of the game. The previously offensively-struggling
Phillies’ line-up is starting to get their act together since the return of Chase Utley, their five time All Star hitter. Jimmy Rollins commented, "The lineup's starting to come together and we're getting healthier. So you feel better about yourself and it
shows up on the field."
Roy Oswalt was the ace from Philadelphia’s side and he was excellent as he contributed when on the mound, and off it as well. He pitched six flawless innings and if that was not enough contribution to the team’s victory, by belting out a RBI single to complement
his classy pitching.
Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for Francisco Rodriguez of the Mets who had been on a high since April 17
after managing to go without giving up a single run since then. His streak came to an end against the National League leading Phillies and his team just could not recover after his mistakes. The Phillies scored thrice off Rodriguez that contributed heavily
to the 6-4 win.
Rodriguez was the first person to admit his faults and defeats as he said, “Hey, I’m a human being. It wasn’t my day. I’ve just got to put it behind me and get ready for tomorrow.”
The third inning witnessed the ball connect to Jimmy Rollins bat as the first run of the game was belted out. Carlos Ruiz scored off it. Oswalt decided to use his arms to score a run, after pitching fabulously, as he singled and John Mayberry Jr. scored.
The Mets silenced the men from Philadelphia for the next couple of innings as Carlos Beltran singled and Jose Reyes scored. More run contributions came from Angel Pagan in the sixth inning and Reyes in the seventh one.
Rollins decided to score another one for the City of Brotherly Love in the eighth innings when he doubled and Domonic Brown scored. This levelled the score for both teams and they battled it out to get the tie breaking run. The Phillies did not wait for
long, immediately going on a hitting spree in the ninth inning with Carlos Ruiz, Marty Martinez and Brown scoring.
The Mets managed to squeeze in a run in the ninth inning with Reyes scoring, but the Phillies remained ahead of them and bagged the win.
