Philadelphia Phillies defeat St. Louis Cardinals 4-0 as Kyle Kendrick throws a gem - MLB Update
Kyle Kendrick keeps the St. Louis Cardinals scoreless in nine innings as the Philadelphia Phillies experience an easy 4-0 win at Busch Stadium, St. Louis, Missouri on May 26, 2012, in third game of the four match series.
Cardinals’ batters stood clueless against Kendrick. As innings passed, despite drawing hits, none of their base-runners went aboard.
Unnecessary belligerency by the Cardinals’ batters at the start of the innings cost them. Kendrick knew their weak-areas. He rightly exploited and got batters struggling for hits.
After the game, Kendrick explained as to what was going on in his mind while he was on his way to throw shut-out game.
''I remember looking up in the fifth or sixth and I saw 40-something pitches,'' Kendrick said. ''I knew if I could just stay doing what I was doing, I could get deep, really deep, and hopefully finish the game.''
The Phillies drew better performance from their offence. Right fielder Hunter Pence went 2-for-3 as he completed two runs and drew one walk.
Short-stop, Jimmy Rollins however was unable to provide the kind of hits the Phillies wanted at the start. He missed five at-bats and brought his batting average down to .225.
First career shut-out game by Kendrick came at great help of the Phillies’ weakened bullpen.
The fact relievers have cost the Phillies defeats on number of occasions, four runs lead being maintained by them in the game was not enough that they can defend easily.
''That's a good offense over there, so it's a good feeling,'' Kendrick said. ''I wanted to go out there and finish it, give the bullpen a little rest and watch Roy throw tomorrow.''
In a fairly one sided game, first three innings passed scoreless. With one run in the fourth, the Phillies rose to a lead. The fact it was not enough, the Phillies clutched real grip over the game only when they added three runs in the sixth.
Phillies’ manager Charlie Manuel will be satisfied with the performance against last year World Series Championship winners.
He will hope to see ace, Roy Halladay regaining his form in upcoming games, after being roughed up number of times in the season.
Role of the Phillies’ offence is going to be of great significance ahead in the season. The manager will want that it keeps showing improvements and lead their recovery.
