Philadelphia Phillies edge out Milwaukee Brewers 7-6 as Jimmy Rollins hits for single in tenth-MLB
The shortstop Jimmy Rollins singles in the tenth and sends Mike Fontenot aboard as the Philadelphia Phillies win 7-6 in a nail biter against the Milwaukee Brewers on July 25, 2012 at Citizens Bank Park, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in the last game of the
three match series.
The Phillies had the lead from the start and were all set for an easy victory.
At one point in time, they managed a substantial lead. The Brewers battled it out with the Phillies as Milwaukee clawed their way back in to the game.
In this regard, Brewers did come close to the victory late in the innings. Rightly exploiting the struggling bullpen of the Phillies, they drew runs from their relief pitchers and tied the score as a result.
Thus, much to the surprise of the Phillies, they made a stunning comeback into the game.
The winner was to be decided through additional innings as the usual nine innings had been completed.
In the top of the tenth, Brewers surged to a lead. Thus, they gave an impression that by keeping the Phillies scoreless in the bottom of the tenth they will go on to win the game.
However, Philadelphia replied strongly by adding two runs and did not allow them to run away with the victory.
Phillies’ starter Vance Worley was unimpressive on Wednesday as he allowed 10 hits and gave up three runs.
Offensively, the Phillies relied largely on doubles by Chase Utley. The second baseman faced four at-bats and struck three hits, while contributing three RBIs.
Meanwhile, the Phillies’ manager Charlie Manuel criticised the way the team played in the latter half of the game. However, he was pleased that eventually they went on to win the game.
"We were playing kind of rough at the end and stayed with it," Manuel said. "We did enough to get by."
Utley was easily the standout contributor for Philadelphia.
He is proud of the fact that the Phillies have not stopped trying to put up splendid performances, despite having dismal record in the season.
"It shows we haven't given up," said Chase Utley. "We have some ground to cover, but we have the type of guys who are determined to win."
The game was the conclusion of the series. The Phillies can use positives that came off from it for putting up impressive performances in the upcoming games.
