Philadelphia Phillies edge past Atlanta Braves, 5-4 – MLB News
Philadelphia Phillies’ out-fielder, Raul Ibanez, played a crucial role as he hit an RBI single to give the Phillies a 5-4 victory against the Atlanta Braves, at Turner Field, Atlanta, on May 13.
Phillies’ manager, Charlie Manuel, gave a huge ovation to some batters, who performed like game winners. While speaking of Michael Stutes and Cole Hamels, he said, “[Stutes] stayed with it and came right back. That was good. He tomahawked a high fastball.
That was actually a pretty good piece of hitting.”
Phillies started their first inning pretty well as they added three runs in it. Ryan Howard was impressive with his bat, as he hit a three-run homer and went 2-for-4 including triple RBIs. On the other side, Chipper Jones took an RBI single on the drive
of Martin Prado to raise some momentum for the Braves. The score-card moved to 3-1 at the end of the first inning. No score was added from the second to fourth inning for both sides.
The game was tied at 3-all in the fifth inning, when Alex Gonzalez drove a shot for a double and scored one run on contribution with Joe Mather, who also singled-off the right-centre field. Gonzalez scored another single on the double of Mather to reach
at the third base with two-outs in the sixth inning. Braves went ahead with a 4-3 lead, at the end of sixth inning.
Jimmy Rollins shined in the seventh inning by hitting a two-out double against Braves’ reliever, Eric O’Flaherty and posted a run on the single of Shane Victorino, to level the game at 4-4. Phillies raised their lead to 5-4 when Howard drove for a double
shot off the right-field area and Ibanez posted a single run with one-out. The ninth inning went score-less for both teams.
Braves’ manager, Fredi Gonzalez, was frustrated with this loss. During the press conference, he said, “It's a classic oblique, and that's not good.”
Hamels pitched six innings and allowed four runs on eight hits with four earned runs. He struck out seven batters and permitted one walk. The Phillies’ relievers permitted no score on their individual pitched innings. On the other hand, Brandon Beachy was
a little bit shaky, as he gave away three runs on six hits with three earned runs and one strike-out.
