Philadelphia Phillies edge past Chicago Cubs 4-3 – MLB Update
Philadelphia Phillies defeated Chicago Cubs 4-3 on Sunday, June 13, to win the four-game series 3-1 at Citizens Bank Park, Philadelphia.
Topping the rank with over 40 wins, the Phillies rallied after the 3-0 lead of Chicago in the very first inning.
The Philadelphia slugger, Ryan Howard hit a two run single in the seventh inning to pave the way for victory. "I just wanted to hit something to the right side of the field and at the very least get the run home," Howard said. "It was a slider away. I was
out in front of it a little bit and I was able to hook it back up the middle."
Roy Oswalt did not really provide a good start to the seemingly unbeatable Phillies when the game kicked off on Sunday. In the very first inning that he came to pitch, Starlin Castro doubled to left, allowing Darwin Barney to score the first run for the
Cubs.
Aramis Ramirez followed by a magnificent two-run homer that was apparently unsettling for the Phillies pitcher who then had to go harder on Blake DewWitt and Tyler Colvin, limiting the Cubs to 2-0 lead.
However, Ryan Howard seemed determined to do something different on Sunday. He scored his first run in the following inning once Doug Davis confronted him. Howard doubled to deep centre to bring Chicago’s lead down to 3-1.
Oswalt then strengthened the grip on the game and hardly allowed the Cubs’ hitters for a safe passage when it comes to the flow of runs. Oswalt remained pretty efficient throughout the coming innings and did not allow them to score.
Raul Ibanez scored team’s second run in the third inning as Oswalt continued to contain the Cubs hitters.
Ryan Howard threw a spinner in the game, and changed the whole shape of it, in the seventh inning with his two-run homer, giving an ultimate 4-3 edge to the Phillies. As Michael Stutes relieved Oswalt, he threw a perfect inning to keep the lead intact.
Ryan Madson replaced Stutes and marched with sheer confidence to turn the lead into a win. Madson succeeded in his strategy, with the velocity of his fastballs, as he sent Chicago packing with a 4-3 victory and winning the series by 3-1.
It will be interesting to see how Phillies carry their winning momentum into their next match-up. The Cubs put in a decent performance, but it was not enough to contain the Phillies’ offence.
