Philadelphia Phillies edge past Pittsburgh Pirates 3-1 – MLB news
Philadelphia Phillies edge past Pittsburgh Pirates 3-1 in the first game of their three-match regular series encounter on July 2 at PNC Park in Pittsburgh.
Phillies played wonderfully throughout the game and won with quite ease. They played well and outplayed the Pirates in all departments of the game.
“That feeling at the end of that inning, that's why us relievers play baseball, That's the feeling you chase. The only way you get that feeling is getting out of the jam. Every time you feel it, it's just an amazing feeling and you want to feel it as much
as possible,” said De Fratus, who has his ERA balloon from 1.46 to 4.70 over a two-week late-June span.
Phillies upfront batters and pitchers showed their true offensive game and rattled the Pirates with great force. Shortstop Jimmy Rollins scored one run on one hit. He played well on his four at bats while he maintained his slugging percentage at .361.
“He was good, but it was hot and he kind of ran out of steam, He did his job and stuff like that,” Philadelphia manager Charlie Manuel said.
Ryan Howard also played well on the plate with his one run on two hits. He also ran for an RBI and showed consistency on his .462 slugging percentage.
“He continues to come in and throw strikes and be aggressive, Other than (two at-bats that ran up his pitch count),” Hurdle said.
Along with batters, the Phillies pitchers also performed wonderfully and showed great consistency on the mound. Starting pitcher Jonathan Pettibone pitched 5.2 innings and allowed one run on three hits. He also allowed one earned run on 3.99 ERA while he
managed to strike out six Pirates’ talented hitters.
Relief pitcher Jacob Diekman also played well and showed great consistency on the mound. He pitched 0.1 inning and remained hitless. He struck out one hitter on his consistent 4.50 ERA.
On the other hand, the Pirates pitchers and hitters did not play well and lost bitterly in the end. Starting Brandon Cumpton pitched 5.2 innings and allowed three runs on six hits along with three earned runs. He struck out three as his ERA rose to 4.02.
