Philadelphia Phillies edged out by Cincinnati Reds 2-3 as Vance Worley gives up two runs-MLB Update
The starting pitcher Vance Worley leaks two runs as the Philadelphia Phillies are beaten 2-3 by the Cincinnati Reds at Citizens Bank Park, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in the third game of the four match series on August 22, 2012.
First four innings were scoreless. It was the beginning of the fifth that saw a base runner reaching home plate and scoring the first run of the game. By the time Cincinnati added two runs in the top of the fifth, the Phillies attempted to reply strongly
in the same inning.
However Philadelphia was unable to blow the lead and ended up losing the game eventually.
Phillies’ offence continues to be putting up dismal shows in the season. Striking just four hits in the match, their hitters failed to provide support to the starting pitcher Worley. Despite the fact Worley gave up just two runs on Wednesday, he recorded
the loss and thus his relatively better show on the mound ended up not bearing any fruit for the team.
Meanwhile, Worley makes an unsuccessful attempt to conceal frustration as he regrets the way they have performed throughout the season and how the things have not favoured them. He is disturbed by the fact that his spell of innings was not supported by the
offence as there is every reason to believe that if the hitters had scored a greater number of runs, he will have won.
"Things just haven't gone our way," said Worley. "If it can go wrong for us, it goes wrong. I want to win; nobody likes losing. I need to do a better job of hiding (his frustration), but it's been a long season."
Other than Worley, Phillies’ relief pitcher Josh Lindblom struggled to contain the flow of hits. He finished two innings and allowed one run, which led to the strengthening of the lead by Cincinnati.
Both second baseman Chase Utley and the first baseman Ryan Howard were hitless on Wednesday. However the Phillies' right fielder Domonic Brown was one of the few batters that had success on the plate. Brown connected two hits which included a home-run in
three at-bats.
Meanwhile, Phillies’ manager Charlie Manuel will be hoping to witness more hits from the batters as they play upcoming games. It will be interesting to observe as to what extent he can be successful in this regard.
